Current Green Team Initiatives
Stop the Maryland Piedmont Reliability Project
The Maryland Piedmont Reliability Project puts much of Maryland at risk. Maryland residents will pay the social and financial costs of infrastructure on our land to fuel power centers in Virginia. This poses threats to our agriculture, animal habitats, and landowner rights. It is a potential health hazard for those within range of this much electricity. Plus, the project itself has many holes with outdated infrastructure, a lack of a well integrated energy plan, and lack of research on other power sources. The New Market Green Team supports STOPMPRP in efforts to stop this project. You can help. Get more info here.

Lunch out of Landfills in Local Schools
Lunch out of Landfills is an initiative to lessen the amount of trash that each school takes to the landfill by implementing recycling, composting, and liquid separation in each school lunchroom. The idea is to teach kids young how to properly sort their 'trash' so that less actual 'trash' ends up in the landfill. We are working with Deer Crossing and New Market Elementary schools to start Lunch out of Landfills in their schools in fall of 2024. Wanna volunteer? Please email us!

Bike to School Day with New Market Elementary
The Green Team is proud to support the New Market Elementary School PTA and the Walking, Wheeling Wolves on Bike to School Day. This event includes a bike rodeo where kids learn good cycling etiquette, visits from local organizations that provide transportation and safety information, and lots of fun competitions for the kids as we encourage everyone to bike to school. Our mission is to make New Market more WALKABLE!

Earth Day Spring Sprucing
Each Earth Day, we partner with the Town of New Market town council, Rotary club, businesses, and the local community to spruce up Main Street. That includes collecting trash up and down Main Street and planting new flowers or placing mulch around New Market Elementary and New Market Middle schools. We are proud to be part of this simple, but powerful initiative that helps to keep our town beautiful.

Pet Waste Stations
The New Market Green Team maintains pet waste bag dispensers in nine locations around the Town of New Market, so that residents have easy access to bags for scooping their dogs’ poop to dispose of in the trash at home or in one of the trash cans along Main Street. Click here for a map of pet waste stations around town. To learn more about why it is important to scoop your dog’s poop, click here.

Maintaining Sustainable MD Certification
Your New Market Green Team worked hard to obtain the highly sought after certification from Sustainable Maryland that shows that we are a town committed to sustainable living. We are proud to join neighboring towns like Middletown, Brunswick, and Emmitsburg in Frederick County. All of our projects are put through the filter of how it serves the community as a whole and if it will help us achieve certification through Sustainable Maryland.

New Market Community Garden
We are proud to partner with New Market Grange No. 362 on South Alley and Grow Frederick, Inc. to help with the New Market Community Garden on the Grange property in South Alley.
Here's how it works: - The Grange owns the land and will 'open' for the season to get the ground prepared for you - You can rent a plot and have your own garden space - It's yours for the entire growing season, May 1st - Nov 1st - You choose what you want to plant and manage your own space - Cost is $125 and all money goes to Grow Frederick and the Grange for tools and maintenance More details and registration here. |
Stormwater Retrofit Program
The New Market Green Team helps the Town of New Market reduce the amount of polluted runoff that flows from neighborhoods and businesses into nearby streams. About half of the Town was developed long before stormwater management regulations were in place, so runoff from these areas flows untreated directly into tributaries of Bush Creek and Linganore Creek. In 2017, the Town commissioned a Stormwater Retrofit Plan that identifies specific locations to install stormwater projects that capture, store, and clean runoff from these already-developed areas. The New Market Green Team assists the Town secure grant funds to design and construct stormwater retrofit projects recommended in the plan. The first project, completed in 2020, converted the Town’s unused fire suppression pond on North Alley to a step pool storm conveyance system. This system uses a series of shallow pools, vegetation, and an underlying filter to safely convey, slow down, and remove pollutants from stormwater runoff that flows from Main Street and the adjacent alleys and neighborhoods. Rain barrels reduce stormwater runoff and help you conserve water when using the captured water for your lawn and flower gardens. The New Market Green Team purchased these barrels from the Arc of Frederick County, a local organization that helps people with developmental disabilities lead lives with purpose and meaning.
We also have a compost bin initiative! Compost bins are helpful in reducing overall food waste by re-using it to fertilize our gardens. We have a limited number of rain barrels and compost bins for sale this Summer; they are first come first serve. Cost for a rain barrel and a compost bin is $40.00 each! Fill out a rain barrel form here. Fill out a compost bin form here. Once we receive your form, we will reach out with payment options and a time for you to pick up your barrel or bin from New Town Hall. |
